Dentistry for the handicapped PDF Print E-mail

Dentistry for the handicapped. A unique philanthropy sponsored by the Grottoes of North America, a Masonic affiliated body, was instituted in June 1970.  The beginning of the program had the heart of its' operation in Chicago Illinois at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Dental care for the handicapped is the answer to a long standing medical need.  By virtue of their handicap, many children cannot receive traditional dental services.  Dentists with specialized training are need to care for the children.

Dentistry for the handicapped combines a unique partnership with qualified dentists throughout the country.  The program is designed to help needy children with the best dental care possible.

The services can be given in most communities throughout the country.  The child should be capable of some cooperation with the dentist in the local treatment center.

HOW TO APPLY

Dental care will be provided without regard to faith, creed or color to any handicapped child (up to the age of 18) with the following conditions:

Cerebral palsy; muscular dystrophy; mental retardation; myasthenia gravis

Patients must be sponsored by a local Grotto.  If it becomes necessary to transport the child for treatment, money from the Helwig Fund may be available.

To get started, call the Al Sirat Grotto's "Doctor of Smiles" found on the committee page.
